    Hi Parents and Students,

I am very excited to meet you all.  I really want my new students to love first grade and to love learning.  I've listed a lot of information below to help the transition of my students into first grade.

-I will be outside ready to greet the students on the first day of school.  Students should arrive to school at 8:30 to 8:45 am.  Our room is the first classroom on the right side, after the office, down the kindergarten/first grade wing.  It's Room #1.  If your child is a pick-up, please make sure that you send a written note in, or call the school's office.  Also indicate whether your child is a pick-up student every day or just on certain days.

-Students will have their own desk and bin to place their backpacks, extra clothing, and school supplies in.

-Students will receive a new, red, classroom folder for information and homework.  The folder will be a great way for us to communicate as well as using email.  Place any notes for me, or the office, in the student folder.  I will check them every morning and pass along any information.

-After the first week of school, student's will come home with a weekly homework packet, a checklist of daily assignments, and reading work.  The homework packet is usually sent home on a Friday afternoon and should return to school on the following Friday.  Students will have daily sight words to practice reading, and spelling patterns to learn.  They will have a weekly or biweekly book to practice reading to a parent, adult, or an older sibling.  Parents will sign a reading log and the student can bring their book and reading log back to school. Don't worry, I will introduce everything slowly.

-Send your child to school with a mask daily.  We will have extras if something happens to your child's mask during the school day.  I will give mask breaks throughout the day to help make sure that the students are comfortable.

    - Students will be provided with a free breakfast and lunch if they want it.  Students may bring their own lunch from home as well.  Students may also bring in a water bottle.

-We will have a daily snack time in the afternoon, so students should bring something in.  No worries if a student forgets.  I will provide a packaged snack for those students that need one.

-Everyday the students will be working on Fundations (Phonics, Blending Spelling Patterns, and Handwriting), Independent Reading, I-Ready Math, and Writer's Workshop.  They will also have Reading Groups, Social Studies, Science Activities, Computer Time, and a Craft for one or two times a week.

-The students will have weekly tests in reading, spelling, and math.  They will have practice tests during the beginning of the school year.  Often I will need to read the tests with the class first before they are ready to take tests independently.

-Students will receive grades on quarterly report cards based off of the students performances on classroom tests and assignments.

    Thank you all,

    Mrs. Hogan
