Prompts to encourage your reader to become strategic
Self-Monitoring/Correcting their errors:
- Does that sound right?
If they make an error that isn’t grammatically correct or punctuation was omitted.
- Does that look right?
If they make an error that doesn’t match the printed text.
- Does that make sense? Let’s reread and see what could make sense there.
If they make an error without correcting it, where meaning could be lost.
When stuck on a word:
- If you know ___, then you know ____.
- Break the word into syllables or parts
Prompts to encourage deeper comprehension:
- How does the story make you feel?
(analyzing the mood of the story)
- What was the author really trying to tell us/teach us?
(exploring theme or big idea)
- What did the character learn throughout the story?
- How was ___ and ____ the same/different?
- What did the author do to make it interesting?
