• Drawing and Painting 2021-2022

    Drawing & Painting is a full year/one credit course

    COURSE DESCRIPTION 

    This course is open to students in grades 10-12 that have completed the prerequisites Studio in Art & Studio in Design and who want to advance their skills and techniques in drawing and painting. Students will work with media such as charcoal, colored pencils, oil pastels, watercolors, acrylic paint and mixed media. The course will focus on fundamentals while also encouraging students to develop their own expression and style.

    This course is of special interest for students who may choose to study art at an advanced level and want time to build work for their portfolios. Portfolios are used for presentation of student work in college applications, scholarships, and summer programs such as NYSSSA.

    COURSE FORMAT
    This course blends instructor demonstrations, art history presentations/discussions and group critiques with hands-on art making. Students are expected to attend class daily and actively participate in all aspects of the course including cleanup. Students are expected to come to class prepared and ready to work.

    CLASSROOM RULES
    The art room is to be treated as a studio space: a place for all students to comfortably study, create and discuss artwork. Students are expected to follow the rules outlined below at all times to make our studio a safe and enjoyable place to work for everyone>
    Be Respectful: to peers (including their work and opinions), instructors and the materials. 
    Be Present: which means arrive on time, prepared, work diligently the entire period AND clean up
    Be Safe: No eating, drinking or cell phone use.


    ➢ Examples of appropriate behavior:
    • Listening when the speaker is talking
    • Handling materials in a safe manner and as instructed
    • Showing respect for all other students’ artwork and ideas
    • Help with the supervision of the classroom by performing the assigned tasks to the best of your ability
    • Keep current and up-to-date with all assignments
      Please Ask permission from the instructor before leaving the room.  

    Examples of inappropriate behavior:
    • Insensitive comments to any other student about their artwork
    • Showing disrespect to the teacher or other students
    • Not cleaning up after yourself
    • Eating in class
    • Texting and phone use not for class
    • Foul language 

    Grading 

    60% - Art Projects 

    20% -  Class work & Visual Journals 

    20% - Participation 

    Final Grade is 80% class average and 20% is Final Art Portfolio
