Earth Science
Saugerties High School
September Syllabus
The Earth Science Program is a course of study designed to encourage students to investigate their world through first hand experiences. Earth Science is one of the most relevant disciplines. Through this program, students should gain a new understanding of the world around them. By investigating the systems of the Earth and their interactions we can learn to appreciate the dynamic equilibria of our planet. Students should also grow to understand their dependence upon the Earth, its finite resources, and limited ability to recover from abuse.
Science Requirements for New York State Students:
Under NYS standards, all students are required to pass one Regent’s Examination in science and complete three (3) credits of science to graduate. There is a lab requirement that must also be met to pass the class and be allowed to sit for the Regents Exam. All labs must be completed in a satisfactory manner and handed in to fulfill this requirement. See additional lab requirements below.
Daily Class Requirements:
- 3-ring Loose Leaf Binder 4. Pens AND #2 Pencils
- Extra Loose Leaf Paper5. Reference Table
- Textbook (everyday)
Class Requirements:
The requirements of this course are to complete all the assigned work with a final average of 65% or higher. This requirement includes handling in all completed labs at the end of the year. Failure to complete all requirements will result in you being held in Earth Science for another year.
Grading:
Per marking period:
Tests = 40% Final Year Average: 4 Marking Periods = 80%
Quizzes =20% Regents Exam = 20%
Homework = 20%
Labs = 20%
Quizzes:
Quizzes may be given with or without notice. The majority of quizzes will be based on the previous night’s homework. Therefore, in order to pass the quizzes you MUST do your homework!
Homework:
It is fact that true learning does not occur simply in the classroom. Therefore, homework will be given occasionally and is expected to be complete. All homework will be based on either that day’s work, or as an introduction to the next day’s work. The majority of home works will be a simple worksheet, a reading assignment, or a few questions from the textbook. It is your responsibility to ask me for the work you missed while you were out which includes getting all notes and/or handouts, and doing the assigned homework problems.
Lab Requirements:
Section 8.2 of the rules of the Board of Regent’s states that: “Only those persons who have satisfactorily met the laboratory requirements as stated in the state syllabus for a science shall be admitted into the Regent’s Examination in that science.” You will have 3 lab periods each 6-day cycle. The lab must be handed in at the end of your third lab period for that cycle (usually on an E or F day). If your lab is incomplete you will need to come in after school to complete that lab. Any lab not completed by “F” day of the next cycle will receive a grade of 0%. That lab will still need to be completed and in a passing manner to be accepted for your lab folder.
Classroom Procedure:
We will cover a lot of material which is not always in your textbook. There are also enough handouts to account for half of the rainforest. It is imperative that you maintain a neat, current and useful notebook. This notebook must be brought into class each and every day of the school year. Each page in your notebook will be numbered and needs to be kept up to date just in case a notebook quiz is given. Spiral notebooks will only hinder your ability to keep track of all notes and handouts.
If for any reason a class will be missed (music program, field trips, etc.), I need to know about it beforehand. This will allow me to give you the work you will miss. You are responsible for the work done while you were out. This includes, getting all notes and/or handouts, and doing all assigned homework. In the event that an absence occurred on the day of a test, it is your responsibility, to show up on the day of the assigned re-test to avoid receiving a grade of zero.
If you are caught talking or communicating in anyway, or caught cheating during a test or quiz, you will receive a ZERO as your test/quiz grade.
Class Rules:
-Be in your seat and working when the bell rings
-Have all books and materials in class and take IT with you when you leave
-Treat each person with dignity and respect
-Do not write on the furniture

I have read this and reviewed the information with my child including the lab requirement portion for Earth Science. I understand that if the labs are not complete, in a satisfactory manner and included in the students lab folder my son/daughter will not be eligible to take the Regents exam and is also not eligible for summer school.
