ATTENDANCE POLICY & MAKE-UP WORK GUIDELINES

-
50% of the quarterly grade in both Participation in Government and AP U.S. Government & Politics is based on classwork and participation.
-
Students receive a participation grade everyday, on a scale of 0-2:
- Being present for the majority of class (22 of 43 minutes) earns the student 1 point.
- Being prepared (having all required materials, i.e. pen, notebook, etc.), and actively (verbally) participating in a substantive manner (meaning: offering current events, opinions/reactions, asking pertinent questions regarding content/curriculum), earns the student 1 point.
- Students who are late to class (without a pass from a teacher, administrator, or counselor) will have 1 point deducted from the daily participation grade. Students will also lose participation points for sleeping in class, using their phone/electronic device without permission, or for disciplinary reasons that result in removal from class. Please note that for points not to be deducted, applicable passes must be presented at the time of arrival to class.
- Students who are absent from class will not earn any participation points for the day.
-
"Absent"/"not present" is defined as: not present for class or not present for more than half of class (22 minutes) for ANY reason (illness, music rotation, nurse visitation, field trips, school events [e.g. blood drive donations], meetings with other teachers/administrators, etc.).
Students who arrive late without an approved pass or who substantively disrupt the class [e.g. requiring removal from the classroom] will have 1 point deducted from their daily participation grade. These points, and those absences from class due to 'cutting' class or other 'unexcused' absences, are not able to be earned at a later time.
Participation points unearned due to absence can be alternatively earned if students complete a standard make-up assignment; 2 assignments for each period absent will earn 2 participation points.

Current Events Assignment
Here is a printable current events assignment. In the event of a class absence, participation points can be earned by completing these assignments. Please follow the guidelines closely.
Also, please note that each assignment earns 1 participation point. A missed class = 2 points unearned. Therefore, to earn both points, 2 assignments should be completed for each class absence in order to earn a 100% for the day.
