  • FACT or FICTION?

So, you've just received an e-mail asserting that:

President Obama isn't an American citizen?  [he is]

Heroin disguised as "Smarties" are being distibuted to schoolkids?  [they aren't]

Heard about a mass murder committed by terrorists in Bowling Green, KY?  [there wasn't]

Once upon a time, urban legends were considered almost exclusively an oral tradition, spread by word of mouth alone. Only when they were collected and published in books were these popular stories ever written down. The Internet, needless to say, has changed all that. Email and the Web are now the primary way legends, rumors, and hoaxes are spread. The term "Netlore" was coined to provide a handy label for this new phenomenon.

    CONSPIRACY THEORIES:

Commonly, when discussing United States history and government, students will ask questions about various conspiracy theories - these questions have increased with the advent and sophistication of the Internet and conspiracy websites.

Two of the more recent subjects for these theories are the moon landing and the 9/11 attacks. FoxTV aired a special in 2001 suggesting the moon landing was a fake and a popular Internet video/website/group called "Loose Change" have called the 9/11 attacks an orchestrated event planned and executed by the U.S. government itself.

Although these theories are interesting and, oftentimes, well-done pieces of misleading propaganda -- they can negatively affect people's conception of their government and history, thus altering future values and decisions they may make. In that light, I have attempted to find some 'debunking', or factual information, that disproves these theories.

The following, although a crudely titled website/blog, is a great point-by-point response to the "Loose Change" movie -- showing the filmmakers' misinformation, half-truths, out-of-context witness or expert statements, and other tools of the conspiracy theory trade:
