• English 12 Syllabus:

     

    This outline does not cover all of the work scheduled for you this year. It is based on the New York State Requirements.

    I. Writing:

    A.  You will be required to write in your journal every day.

    B. You will be required to asses two points of view and demonstarte the validity of both.

    C. You will be required to outline compositions, reading materials and lectures in class.

    D. You will be expected to write a concise, coherent five paragraph composition.

    II. Spelling and Vocabulary:

    A. You will be held responsible for the spelling, part of speech and defintion of any vocabulary word in our various literature units. 

    B. You will be held responsible SAT (Student Achievement Test) vocabulary units.

    III. Oral Work:

    A. Your class participation in discussion will weigh heavily in marks. You will be expected to be willing to participate, not to always be right.

    B. You may opt to give formal or informal reports in class as part of a literature unit project.

    C.  You may opt to give audiovisual reports as a part of a literature unit project.

    IV. Grammar:

    A. You will be tested as to your knowledge of grammar; plurals, possessives, capitalization, punctuation in simple sentences. If needed we will work on these.

    B. You will required to identify and punctuate various types of compound and complex sentences.

    C. You will be required to identify and punctuate gerunds, participles, and infinitives.

    V. Literature:

    A. You will be required to read the modern novel, Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes.

         1. You will be expected to identify the standard literary techniques of modern fiction.

          2. You will be expected to do in depth analysis of conflicts, themes and characters of this novel.

    B. You will continue your study of Shakespearean literature with A Midsummer Night's Dream.

           1. You will be expected to to relate the customs and background of these times.

            2. You will be expected to identify the traditional dramatic techniques of five act plays.

             3. You will also be expected to translate Shakespearean English into modern English.

    C. You will study Mulitculturalism through short stories, excerpts from texts and modern video clips.

              1. You will be expected to to do in depth analysis of the diversity in literature, reflected in today's society.

               2. You will be expected to develop a balanced and fair perception of the various points of view.
