We usually begin every school day with a journal entry. It is a do now. You come into class, and get started on your day. You quietly write 5 complete sentences. I do not grade these journals on spelling, punctuation or grammar. I only want you to be writing daily with intent and purpose.
We start out with very basic journals; tell me about your family, tell me about you best friend, tell me about the best places you have ever been etc.
We then move into more controversial topics. These topics are usually black and white to most people. These types of topics are important because they create amazing persuasive writing. When you feel strongly about a topic, you create better writing. Also the Regent's exam always has you choose one side of a topic, but makes you acknowledge the other point of view.
For many of you it is difficult to feel strongly about something, and still be able to see the merit in the opposing argument. Journaling is practicing that very skill. There are always two sides to a story.
Debate is welcome when journaling. Again, many of you have never debated a topic. What is important to good debate is realizing that the other side feels as strongly as you do. If you go on Facebook or Instagram, you see how mean spirited people can be when they do not agree or value your side or opinion.
I will not allow you to tear each other for opposing views, you must be open minded, listen, but in the end write about what you feel is right and true. It would make good practice if you gave a sentence or two to understanding the opposing argument because the Regents exam will make you do that.
And as always, if a topic, or discussion makes you uncomfortable and you want an alternate topic, all you have to do is ask. We all have different backgrounds and areas that are sensitive to each of us.
