His father Solomom S. Salingerwas a foods wholesaler and his mother Marie Jillich Salinger (later chnaged her name to Miriam to accomodate her husband's strict adherence to the Jewish faith) was a stay at home mother.

JD has one sibling, Doris, who was 8 years older than him.

He grew up on Riverside Drive in New York City.

Salingerwas wealthy. He attended Manhattan's McBurney School, managed the fencing team, but kicked out because he failed too many classes. (much like his main character Holden Caulfield). After he flunked out, he was forced to go toprivate school, at Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, Pennsylvania.

He graduated in 1936.
