    Reading Shakespeare can be both funand challenging. This unit is required by both the school district and thestate. If you follow the suggestions below, the unit will be easier for you,and you will probably succeed and enjoy the new experience.

    I.                   Reading:

    A.    Read the footnotes for a scene beforereading the scene.

    B.     Learn the characters names as soon aspossible.

    C.     Read the notes for the scene beforeyou read the scene itself.

    D.    Be aware of who is on the stage atall times and how they may be affecting the dialogue.

    E.     Be aware of what the actors who leavethe stage have been instructed to do. They may be affecting the action withoutactually being present.

    F.      Constantly paraphrase the actor’slines into your own language. Put it in your own words, and you will understandit better.

    G.    Each night read aloud lines coveredin class. If you can, read them to an audience. Then explain what is going onto your audience.

    H.    Know your vocabulary. These lists areonly partial. Look up any words that you do not know.

    I.       Ask questions in class if you arelost. Don’t wait for things to be explained.

     

    II.                 Assignments and Grades:

    A.    The schedule of assignments is listedbelow. Don’t fall behind. Although most of the reading will be done in class,go over the day’s work each night on your own.

    B.     At the end of each scene expect aquiz on the plot, conflict development and characterizations. Likewise, you maybe asked to translate lines into modern English.

    C.     You are responsible for allbackground material.

    D.    You will be expected to use yourvocabulary words in sentences on your own, define them, and give their parts ofspeech.
