Ms. Antonelli’s steps to writing well
When writing anessay, there are many things to keep in mind. The “to do list” to complete whenwriting is long. The writing process is time consuming, and sometimespainstaking. When writing we get caught up in bad habits, like plot summary andswitching tenses. We veer from our intentions and fail to completely and preciselyanswer the question.
So, how do wewrite a good essay? What is the fool proof way to always do well? One thingthat will ensure your success is REVISION! Never write an essay off the top ofyour head. Make a rough draft, proofread, and revise, then revise again!
When you get an essay question, read it carefully. Figure outexactly what is being asked. Then, create a topic sentence (many the order ofthe question). Then produce two or three details to support your topicsentence. Briefly address them in your introduction. Then transition to yourfirst body paragraph.
In your bodyparagraphs you are expected to address in detail the statements that you madein your introductory paragraph. You must support and develop your ideas. How do you do that? We do that with textualevidence. Use at least two or three supporting details. Make your bodyparagraphs demonstrate you convictions, and finally write your conclusion.
The conclusionshould show acknowledgement of what you have stated and proven. It is a wrapup, an end summation. It is what the reader should have learned from yourwriting.
Writing Errors
There are so many ways to slip up inyour writing. How do you prevent that? Well, the first way is to be consciousof your missteps. Make note of your common errors and then triple check to makesure that you have not repeated them. Then, like all else, you must practice tobecome perfect. Writing is an art form. Some people have a natural gift for it,others struggle with it their entire lives. If you follow the steps that I amgiving you, this process can be bearable.
