    ENGLISH 9 SYLLABUS

    This outline does not cover all other work scheduled for you this year. It merely points out the highlights and main goals for the year. It is based on the New York State Requirements.

     

    I.                 Writing:

    A.    You will be required to write in your journal on a daily basis. These writings will encompass descriptive writing, persuasive writing, and narrative writing.

    B.  You will be required to outline compositions, reading materials and lectures in class.

    C.  You will be expected to write a concise, coherent five paragraph essay.

    II.              Spelling and Vocabulary:

    1.  You will be held responsible for the spelling, part of speech and definition of any vocabulary word in our various literature units.

    2.  You will be quizzed regularly to show your mastery of these words.

    III.           Oral Work:

         A. Your class participation in discussion will be expected to be appropriate, open minded and conscientious.

    B.  You may opt to give formal and informal reports in class as part of a literature unit project.

    C.  You may opt to give audiovisual reports as part of a literature unit project.

    IV.          Grammar:

    A.  You will be tested as to your knowledge of seventh and eighth grade grammar: plurals, possessives, capitalization, punctuation, parts of speech and parts of sentence. If needed, we will work on these.

    B.  You will be required to identify and punctuate various types of compound and complex sentences.

    C.  You will be required to identify and punctuate gerunds, participles, and infinitives.

    V.             Learning Styles and Techniques:

    A.  You will do various assignments and projects though differentiated instruction. You will demonstrate content and knowledge through various mediums and methods.

    B.  You will incorporate interdisciplinary curriculum in your English content area. You will connect outside subject areas to your current area of study.

    VI.          A. You will study, in depth, Greek Mythology in The Odyssey of Homer.

    1.  In this unit, you will be expected to identify the major Greek customs, gods, goddesses, and folklore.

    2.  You will be required to recognize and explain the qualities of traditional literary epics and epic heroes.

    3.  You will be introduced to Shakesperean literature with Romeo and Juliet.

    1.  You will be expected to relate the customs and background of these times.

    2.  You will be expected to identify the traditional dramatic techniques of five act plays.

    3.   You will also be expected to translate Shakespearean English into modern English.

    4.   You will be required to read at least one modern drama in class; this year it will be J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye.

    1.  You will be expected to identify the standard literary techniques of modern fiction.

    2.  You will be expected to do in-depth analysis of conflicts, themes, and characters of this novel.
